Medical Coder
Medical Coder
Schedule: Part Time; with the possibility of remote work after a probationary period
Reports To: Business Office Director
Position Summary: Accountable for conversion of diagnoses and treatment procedures into codes using an international classification of diseases. Requires skill in the sequencing of diagnoses/procedures to optimize reimbursement. Ensures that records are coded in an accurate and timely manner. Previous experience in Surgical, Orthopedic and Pain Management preferred.
Essential Functions:
• Ensures that records are coded within 7 days of discharge, excluding weekends and holidays or when charges complete.
• Reviews medical record thoroughly to ascertain all diagnoses/procedures.
• Utilizes computerized coding/abstracting equipment.
• Codes all diagnoses/procedures in accordance with ICD-10-CM coding principles and the Coding Manual.
• Meets productivity standard of assigning codes to a minimum of three (3) medical records per hour on federally funded patients and six (6) medical records on non-federally funded patients.
• Meets quality standards of having 95% of principal diagnoses and procedures appropriately and/or correctly coded.
• Maintains 99% rate of information correctly abstracted.
• Reviews coding periodicals within seven (7) days of receipt.
• Notifies director whenever work is more than 48 hours behind work deadline.
• Assists the director with state requirements and reports.
• Ensures data quality and optimum reimbursement allowable under the federal and state payment systems.
• Acts as a resource person to hospital staff for coding and may provide education regarding coding changes/issues.
• Must be familiar with all medical record and coding requirements.
Education/Experience/Knowledge:
• High School graduate or equivalent.
• Certified Coder or years of previous hospital experience as a Coder.
• Knowledge of diagnoses/procedures in accordance with ICD-10-CM coding principles for both acute and skilled nursing facilities.
• Ability to work with physicians in a collaborative manner.
